2017 Paravolley

From October 26 to October 29, 2017, Défi sportif AlterGo was pleased to host four men’s teams and three women’s teams for the ParaVolley Pan American Zone Sitting Volleyball Championships.The men’s teams were from Canada, Brazil, Costa Rica and the United States; meanwhile, the women’s teams were from Brazil, the United States and Canada. The competition, a qualifying event for the 2018 World Championships, was sanctioned by World ParaVolley and headed by ParaVolley Pan America.

The executive director of the Association sportive et communautaire du Centre-Sud (ASCCS), Mr José Rebelo, a former member of the national Canadian sitting volleyball team, was an ambassador for the event. The competition was held at Complexe sportif Claude-Robillard. Well-known for its accessible sports facilities, the Complex has experience in hosting high-level Paralympic athletes. It is also the main venue of the annual Défi sportif AlterGo.

A spectacular sport

Sitting volleyball requires a lot of dexterity. Players are often leg-amputees. Besides the players being seated, sitting volleyball is different from traditional volleyball in several ways: the court is smaller, the net is lower and the players must always remain on the ground unless they are on the defensive in the back or the front.

A first for Défi sportif AlterGo

This was the first time for Défi sportif AlterGo to host an international competition beside its flagship spring event that brings together over 7,000 elite and up-and-coming athletes. The organization wants national and international sports federations to benefit from its expertise in planning inclusive sports events. Hosting these competitions also contributes to the reputation of Montréal as a universally accessible city.
