Canadians to face off in quarter-final of Montréal 2023 World Boccia Cup

There was lots of action on the boccia courts at the Maurice-Richard Arena on day two of the Montréal 2023 World Boccia Cup.

Among the Canadians, Iulian Ciobanu (BC4) posted his second consecutive win. The Montréaler was undaunted by reigning world champion Shunsuke Uchida of Japan, beating him 5-3. In his first game of the tournament on Tuesday, Ciobanu defeated five-time Paralympic medallist Eliseu dos Santos of Brazil.

Also in BC4 action, Marco Dispaltro outplayed Martin Streharsky of Slovakia on Tuesday. However, Wednesday’s match against Boris Nicolai of Germany proved a little tougher. The Canadian lost 6-2.

On Thursday, Dispaltro and Ciobanu will go head-to-head in the quarter-final. Also on Thursday, Alison Levine, Joëlle Guérette, Danik Allard, and Lois Martin will wrap up the preliminary phase of the individual competitions as they look ahead to the elimination rounds. Kristyn Collins must wait for the result of the final game in her group to discover her fate.

Forty years later, Monique Lefebvre’s impact remains strong

At the 40th Défi sportif AlterGo, Monique Lefebvre’s legacy continues to resonate. She was on hand Wednesday to welcome athletes from schools throughout Quebec and present medals, and she shared her thoughts on the scope of the event she founded. She had nothing but admiration for those who are pursuing her work. “It’s really crazy. You have to be crazy to do this. It’s spectacular. It takes a lot of energy. It’s a huge responsibility. But when you combine the contributions of all these people, all their expertise, you get something amazing.”
