The 41st Défi Sportif AlterGo came to a close on Sunday! This year’s Défi sportif AlterGo has been marked by many unforgettable moments, and the final day was no exception. Today’s powerchair soccer, wheelchair basketball, and boccia finals rounded off 10 days of intense sports action.

Silver for Iulian Ciobanu and Alison Levine

All week, both up-and-coming and elite boccia athletes hit the courts at the Maurice-Richard Arena, and today, the final balls were thrown. Défi Sportif AlterGo athletic ambassador athlete Iulian Ciobanu and his teammate Alison Levine thrilled fans by advancing to the BC4 pairs final.

After a tight semi-final match that saw the Canadians get the better of the South Koreans, Ciobanu and Levine were pitted against Hong Kong, the world’s third-ranked pair. The Canadians ultimately bowed out by a score of 5-0 to capture the silver medal. Despite the loss, Ciobanu takes a positive view of his experience at the 41st Défi Sportif AlterGo. “Unfortunately, we weren’t able to defend the title we won last year, but as an ambassador, I’m proud of today’s performance.”

In the CB1/2 category, the Canadian team finished 4th.

Action was plentiful in Longueuil

The Cégep Édouard-Montpetit Sports Centre also played host to a number of exciting finals today!

In the power soccer tournament, which featured teams from Canada, the USA, and Mexico, the 2 American teams came out on top. The podium was completed by one of the Mexican teams.

In wheelchair basketball, teams from the Centre d’intégration à la vie active won both the A and AA tournaments. In the Minis category, the Aigles du Sud-Ouest de l’Île de Montréal emerged victorious.

41st Défi an all-round success

Maxime Gagnon, president and CEO of AlterGo, is proud of the past week’s results and events. “It was spectacular to see both new Défi Sportif AlterGo athletes and those who come back year after year, as well as the coaches and volunteers. It was very touching. I think we can say it was a big success.”

When it comes to next year’s Défi Sportif AlterGo, Gagnon makes no secret of the fact that he hopes to expand the event’s reach even further. “For us to become even better known, it all starts here.”
