A chilly, sunny day greeted eager and enthusiastic young athletes this Wednesday morning at the 42nd Défi sportif AlterGo mini-marathon. The outdoor track at Complexe Sportif Claude-Robillard was the place to be, and over 1,100 athletes were there to participate in a variety of races with and without mobility aids, while another 500 competed indoors.

Students surpass their limitations in the mini-marathon

Over 1,100 athletes took to the track under chilly but sunny skies for the mini-marathon on Day 6 of the 42nd Défi sportif AlterGo. With or without mobility aids, young athletes ran distances of 400m, 800m, 1km or 3km.

Athlete ambassador Félix Gemme was happy and in his element, given that running is his favorite sport at the Défi sportif AlterGo. After his 400m with walker race, Félix commented: “It went well! I feel like I was able to surpass myself, and that’s really important to me.”

Friday, Félix will be back on track to run the 100m race without mobility aids.

Meanwhile, there was also a lot of action taking place indoors, as youngsters competed in 4 sports.

On hand to accompany classes of youth athletes with autism spectrum disorders from his school, the École Louis-Fréchette in Repentigny, was Principal Hugues Trudel. The sport of predilection for his students today was the ball hockey tournament. Nearly 80 students from École Louis-Fréchette will take part in the Défi sportif AlterGo this week, and for Principal Trudel, it’s only natural to be there for a fourth year. “As a principal, my role is to support initiatives. I have staff who volunteer and get involved, and I make whatever resources I have available, to help and encourage everyone. It’s great to see the results!”
