During its 36th edition, Défi sportif AlterGo is presenting competitions that promise to be exciting, and new ones have been added to enhance its programming. From April 26 to May 5, over 8,000 athletes will compete over a 10-day period in more than 15 sports at 6 competition venues.
These must-see competitions are:
Some 100 athletes from 20 countries will compete at the Boccia World Open, which will take place from April 29 to May 4 at the Maurice-Richard Arena. This tournament allows athletes to accumulate points in the world ranking. With the national and school competitions taking place at the same location, this is a unique site because all 3 levels of competition—next generation, in-development and elite—will gather under the same roof.
The Howie-Morenz Arena will host the para-hockey selection camp for the Canadian development team at the beginning of the week. Training and three intra-team games will take place between April 26 and May 1. The selection team will then play a series of 3 games against the United States.
Défi sportif AlterGo is also organizing the Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championships, during which 14 teams from 10 provinces will compete. The event will take place at the Complexe sportif Duval Auto in Boucherville from April 26 to May 1.
Next, two para-cycling competitions will be presented on May 4 and 5 at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. About 60 international athletes will participate in the Longhi Challenge and the Défi sportif AlterGo races, two events that also allow them to accumulate points in the world ranking.
Para-athletics will be back this year at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve and will present the 10 km wheelchair race of the Classique Chantal Petitclerc on May 4th.
As for power chair soccer, teams from Canada and the United States will participate in a tournament at the Centre sportif du Collège Édouard-Montpetit in Longueuil from May 3 to 5.
At the same location, a wheelchair basketball tournament, hosting mainly teams from Quebec and Ontario, will be held from May 3 to 5.
As for the school component, a record 2,200 athletes will take to the start of a mini-marathon on the streets surrounding the Complexe sportif Claude-Robillard on May 1st. Runners will follow a 1 km or 3 km course, in different categories.
NEW TO THE PROGRAM
Défi sportif AlterGo is innovating with the addition of badminton to the program. For the first time, in collaboration with the Canadian Sports Association for the Deaf (CSSA), the event will host a national badminton competition for the deaf. During an introductory activity, athletes and the public will also be able to try out para-badminton.
Also in collaboration with the ASSC, Défi sportif AlterGo is proud to host the first ultimate Frisbee competition for the deaf.
As for the school component, following the successful introduction of CrossFit last year, the discipline is making a comeback as a competition.
Visitors are invited to attend the competitions free of charge, and to try adapted sports and participate in the activities at the Complexe sportif Claude-Robillard animation area.
