Montréal, April 25, 2023 – It’s a year of celebrations for the Défi sportif AlterGo! In addition to the 40th Défi, which is in full swing this week, we are also celebrating the ten-year partnership of the SPVM Police Officers’ Cycling Tour with the Défi sportif AlterGo! The officers who will be participating in the tour in August visited the Défi this morning.
Objective for the SPVM Police Officers’ Cycling Tour: $100,000
The energy level was particularly high at this morning’s opening ceremony. More than 1,000 athletes took part in track and field, baseball, ball hockey, and swimming competitions at the Claude-Robillard Sports Complex. At the Maurice-Richard Arena, 26 teams began the round robin phase of the Montréal 2023 World Boccia Cup.

In addition to the athletes, the SPVM police officers who will cycle the roads of Quebec to raise $100,000 for Défi sportif AlterGo’s student component were also in attendance today. This sum will allow the organization to offer a spectacular event to its athletes, in addition to developing new programs such as the Mini-Défi sportif AlterGo, which will visit athletes with disabilities in remote regions. Pascal Richard, SPVM police officer, is particularly moved by the event, as his daughter is a regular participant. “Océanne, my 19-year-old daughter with Down syndrome, won a medal. When I arrived at home last night, I immediately saw by the pride in her face that she had a big announcement for me. I can affirm that sports are crucial to their self-esteem and their overall heath. The same thing goes for social inclusion. In society, these people exemplify some of the best of humanity, and we’d all appreciate a more humane world.”
Everyone is sporting a 40th anniversary pocket!
The Défi sportif AlterGo team was honoured by the presence of Poches & Fils at the opening ceremony today. For the occasion, the entire AlterGo team proudly showed off their 40th Défi sportif AlterGo pockets! “At Poches & Fils, we generally pick and choose the events and people we do business with. Last year, when I got back from the Défi sportif with my colleague, we immediately went to see my boss with the idea of getting involved in the Défi sportif AlterGo,” said Grégoire Boucher, corporate sales representative at Poches & Fils. “We were both moved by the experience.”

Coming up tomorrow
The national para hockey development team will wrap up preparations for its three-game series against the USA, which will take place on Thursday, Friday, and Sunday. The group stage of individual events will continue at the Montréal 2023 World Boccia Cup, while at the Claude-Robillard Sports Complex, a ball hockey tournament will be held in collaboration with various centres providing services to adults with mental health issues.
