Why donate

You truly have the power to make a difference. By donating to AlterGo, you join an exceptional driving force that helps propel Défi sportif AlterGo athletes to new heights.

It’s not far-fetched to imagine a child discovering sports through Défi sportif AlterGo and being inspired to persevere all the way to the top. That’s exactly the story of Paralympian Cindy Ouellet.

“It’s really thanks to Défi sportif AlterGo, because I went into a gym and saw other young people like me, and I completely fell in love with [wheelchair basketball]. That sport became my career.”

And just like it was for Cindy and her parents, meeting athletes in similar situations, some of whom compete at the provincial, national, or even international level, opens the door to seeing what’s truly possible.

Alisson gobeil et ses parents

Défi sportif AlterGo changes lives not only for the athletes but also for those who support them. That’s exactly what happened to Yanick and Nancy, the parents of Alisson Gobeil.

Traveling from Alma, in the Lac-St-Jean region, to attend Défi sportif AlterGo, the family had a revelation: “It was the first time we realized that [adapted swimming] competitions existed. It was truly a turning point for Alisson.”

And what a turning point it was. Since then, Alisson, who was an athlete ambassador for the 41st edition of Défi sportif AlterGo, has launched an incredible athletic career. A holder of four Canadian para-swimming records, she qualified for all the finals at her first Parapan American Games in Santiago in 2023. She will also be representing Canada at the World Para Swimming Championships in 2025.

When it comes to giving, it can mean money, resources, or even time. That’s exactly the case for Claude Dagenais, who has been a volunteer at Défi sportif AlterGo for over 30 years. At his very first Défi sportif AlterGo, Claude discovered the world of adapted sports. He also met Robert Deschênes, an athlete and goalball coach who was looking for volunteers. Claude was interested, had time to give, and began by volunteering at the Canadian Goalball Championship in Montreal in 1994. That journey eventually led him to a gold medal at the Sydney Paralympic Games as the coach of the Canadian women’s goalball team.

A simple act can have a profound impact. By giving to AlterGo’s annual campaign, you help create moving and inspiring stories like those of Cindy, the Gobeil family, and Claude.
